Time and Tide

The artwork Time and Tide engaged local youth in idea-sharing and collaboration to celebrate the key endemic, vulnerable and endangered species of timtumili minanya / The Derwent River and the near by oceans of lutruwita / Tasmania. It depicts introduced species and the impact of humans on these important habitats. Water currents, seaweed, soft corals, and a vast array of marine life form undulating patterns around the artwork. Woven baskets used for millennia by aboriginal people to collect shellfish such as abalone, show the food abundance of the oceans and rivers of lutruwita / Tasmania.

Marine life featured within the artwork includes Bull Kelp, Giant Kelp, Humpback Whale, Weedy Seadragon, Livebearing Seastar, Mussels, Native Oysters, Pacific Oysters, Soft Corals, Sea Sponges, Sea Whips, Yellow Zoanthids, Chitons, Short-spined Sea Urchins, Long-spined Sea Urchins, Neptunes Necklace, Limpets, Orange Feathered Star, Scallops, Crowned Nudibranch, Southern Rock Lobster, Draughtboard Shark, Shaw’s Cowfish, Abalone, Spotted Handfish, Stingray, Waratah Anemones, Elephant Snail, Northern Pacific Seastar, Moon Jellyfish and Sea Sparkle.
